A resolution that lasts all year

As the New Year is ushered in once again, questions about resolutions reappear. Following an indulgent break, many of us will be assessing how to better ourselves. If we are, it’s important that these decisions aren’t fuelled by self-disgust, or moral obligation, but a genuine want to change.

Yet, as the tinsel and gaudy displays are taken down, the goodwill and the giving that define the festive season shouldn’t also disappear. As a nation, we are currently facing an unprecedented homelessness crisis – not to mention, seemingly constant tragedy. News and official figures act as testament to this. Though these issues can seem insurmountable, leaving us feeling helpless, we shouldn’t stop ourselves from acting: in either a personal or professional, capacity.

For some, action will be personal, but many find solace in helping others. Either way, be forgiving on yourself; change is a journey and results may not be instantaneous. Speaking with Samantha Thomas-Berry, the new Vice President of HR for EMEA at Kellogg’s, she reminded me that the momentous change the firm has undergone could have only been possible with HR acting as the ‘conscience of the business.’ By nurturing a socially aware culture, which supports employees, as well the hardships their communities face, they are aiming for a better 2018.

So, if you do make one resolution this year, let it be defined by your conscience. And should you encounter hurdles, don’t be disheartened – all change begins with small steps.
