 “Tech thousand and nineteen”

In the early part of the twentieth century, households in America experienced rapid change. In 1910 well under 20% of households had electrical lighting, but by the 1950s this had rocketed to almost 100%. There were similar advances for running water, flushing toilets and central heating. Things that today many, if not all, reading this magazine, take for granted. However, for those at the time – and, indeed, for great numbers around the world still – these were life-changing technological advances.

Fast forward to the 2019 and much of the technology that we once conceived of as futuristic and ‘out there’ is now permeating the workplace. No longer is video conferencing, constant mobile communication and having a personal computer you can hold in your hand the preserve of sci-fi. In fact, it’s all become a bit passé. Even automated digital assistants, chatbots and VR are creeping into common understanding of what the modern workplace should offer.

With this being the case, HR Grapevine looked at the impact that technology is having on the world of work. What effect will analytics and data have on engagement and strategic decisions? Where will chatbots help the HR function? Are new models of remote working a panacea? Yet, we didn’t forget the basics. At a time when there is increasing noise about the lack of talent, we spoke to senior HR people about where to look for talent, and how to assess it, so HR can live long and prosper
