Why has it been important to build an apprenticeship scheme that addresses women’s issues including menopause?

For too long, leadership training has tended to overlook topics that have a genuine impact on women’s working lives, from menopause to fertility journeys.

Our Women in Leadership apprenticeship, built by women for women, is designed to develop leadership skills and confidence, helping women to lead authentically and shape successful careers. Alongside core leadership topics, the apprenticeship addresses areas that can uniquely affect women at work to ensure participants have the tools and support to navigate all aspects of their professional journey.

Creating an environment where these conversations happen openly is essential, not just for developing great leaders but for building an inclusive culture where every colleague can progress with understanding and empathy from those around them.

Have schemes like B&Qs apprenticeship programme helped to build parity in terms of gender numbers?

We’re seeing more women than ever choosing to take up apprenticeships right across B&Q - more than half (56%) of our colleagues undertaking one of the over 40 apprenticeships we offer are women. This is a clear sign that our investment in offering accessible, inclusive learning opportunities is making a real difference.

We’re determined to shape a more balanced pipeline of future leaders and make sure diversity within our business reflects the customers and communities we serve. Our Women in Leadership apprenticeship is a catalyst for this change, creating a dedicated space for female colleagues to build their influence, confidence, and career ambitions.

What do women in the scheme say about it?

The feedback from those who took part in this year’s Women in Leadership apprenticeship has been incredibly positive. What really stood out is how much the apprenticeship resonates with their real experiences. It’s not just about developing leadership skills; it’s about creating a community of confident leaders who support one another and the next generation of women coming through. That sense of community is clear to see, with this year’s graduates forming strong relationships with each other despite living in different parts of the country.

Katie Bauman, Graduate Apprentice and Unit Manager at B&Q said, “Traditional leadership content hasn’t always reflected women’s journeys, particularly in male-dominated areas where imposter syndrome can creep in. This apprenticeship feels different as it speaks directly to the challenges women face and creates genuine space for connection and growth.”

Angela Peel, Curriculum Council member and Unit Manager at B&Q said, “For me, this apprenticeship is about more than professional development, it’s about creating a safe, supportive environment where women can connect and grow together. By opening honest conversations around topics like menopause and wellbeing, we’re helping to build a culture where women feel seen and understood.”

What’s the take up been and how long does the apprenticeship programme last for? What makes it special?

We’ve seen an incredible response to our newly designed Women in Leadership apprenticeship, with 34 women graduating in November. Developed by women on B&Q’s Curriculum Council, it weaves personal topics - such as navigating menopause and supporting fertility journeys - into the heart of the curriculum, rather than treating them as add-ons.

The response has shown that when you develop apprenticeships alongside the people it’s for, you don’t just build skills, you help people grow in confidence and see real purpose in what they do.

Shaped by the experiences of those who’ve taken part, the apprenticeship reflects the realities of leading today, giving women the tools to lead with confidence.
