Whilst larger companies can offer enviable perks, such as free gym memberships, or not counting employee’s hours (thanks for that one, Trivago), they are often unattainable for smaller companies, with smaller budgets. However, Shopland says that rewards don’t need to be costly to make people feel good. A recent survey by Peldon Rose showed 84% of workers believe that small perks, such as leaving work early occasionally or even getting ice creams in the summer, would make them more productive – yet 34% of businesses don’t offer these.

Step away from the desk

There is a wealth of research that shows that being active and feeling healthy is critical to happiness and productivity. Shopland explains that holding a meeting outside, going for a short walk, encouraging sports or even doing a team challenge for charity can “create bonds beyond the office” that are “important for relationship building.”
