Considering the higher incidence of chronic – or long term – conditions amongst the neurodivergent population, we wanted to find out more. What does the research tell us? And what can employers do to better support their neurodivergent populations; to not only stay in work and return to work after illness, but also to thrive. After all, it’s generally a given that good work is good for wellbeing. And inclusion in that, should be a right for all.
Neurodiversity isn’t an illness. But research reveals a higher instance of mental health issues faced by people with a neurodivergence – 50% of adults with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and 47% of adults with Autism will experience a co-occurring anxiety disorder, while 70% of adults with ADHD and 40% of adults with Autism will also have a co-diagnosis of depression.
Research also reveals a greater incidence of certain physical health issues amongst neurodiverse individuals. More on this later.
