HR expert says 'unlimited' annual leave is a 'con' - here's why

Gone are the days when a free fruit bowl and an annual Christmas party were work perks to be appreciative of.

2024 has seen the 4-day working week continue to rise in popularity, with 12% of businesses saying they plan to adopt it this year. Alongside that, more and more bosses are offering employees unlimited annual leave, a perk that increased in popularity by 148% since 2017, according to Indeed..

One in five UK workers needed to take time off due to poor mental health caused by pressure or stress last year, a problem that unlimited annual leave is meant to tackle.

However, HR experts are urging Brits to be wary of these increasingly popular work perks, explaining they can actually have a reverse effect that can result in employees feeling burnt out and even more overworked.
