“A good business owner will also lead by example. The following should be considered:
- communicate your respect of different views – demonstrate tolerance in employee interactions or when employees might be listening;
- keep political commentary out of all business-related communications. Notwithstanding your own views do not share these with employees
- avoid advertising in publications/media that may have a particular political slant;
- don’t allow any political signs/literature on company property;
- keep a close check on your company’s social media output.
“Employers do need to appreciate that a total ban on employees talking about politics is likely to be difficult to uphold so those employers need to be realistic and ensure that any talk is legal and conducive to the workplace.
“An approach of ‘nipping in the bud’ makes sense. Explain that the business understands that politics is a subject that creates passion and sometimes anger, but that respect for colleagues and self-control are fundamental requirements in the workplace.”
