5. Local MPs
Of all the jobs mentioned in this list, this will undoubtedly be the most controversial. But consider how much work MPs put in, how much stress they suffer from, how little home-life balance they enjoy and how much public hatred they receive. With this in mind, it is no wonder that our survey revealed local MPs to be one of the most underappreciated career paths.
Your local MP is charged with representing his or her constituents at Westminster. They can help you on all matters relating to Parliament or central government, including issues of tax, work, pensions, immigration and education. They regularly work 70 to 80 hours per week, spend very little time with their families and often get fewer than 6 hours of sleep per night. This workload leads to a huge amount of stress, which ultimately impacts their health. On top of this, many sources suggest that MPs are actually underpaid. It takes a very specific personality type to thrive in this field, and despite their hard work, on the whole MPs are largely regarded as overpaid and underworked.
