1. Bin men & women

Refuse collectors, more commonly referred to as bin men, are tasked with collecting waste and recycling material from industrial, commercial and residential properties.

Comedian Rhod Gilbert once spent a day as a bin man in order to gain a greater understanding of what they go through in an average shift. He was completely unprepared for the physical demands, but soon became aware that it isn’t unusual for a refuse collector to walk 12 miles a day.

For all their hard work, refuse collectors aren’t richly rewarded however they are an essential part of society - and certainly don’t get the recognition they deserve. They work throughout the year, in the sweltering heat of summer and through the freezing cold of winter
