Who would you recruit: Vogue UK's Editor-in-Chief

Miranda Priestly

Miranda Priestly was the main protagonist in the book (and subsequent film) ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, written by Anna Wintour’s (Editor-in-Chief of Vogue US) former assistant, Lauren Weisberger. With close links to the transatlantic version Vogue, Priestly, the famed Editor-in-Chief of Runway magazine holds the relevant experience needed to replace Shulman. However, her icy demeanour may not impress her staff – as we all know that drilling fear into employees does not create a healthy workplace culture.

However, Meryl Streep who played the chick-lit ‘version’ of Wintour made a point that she was not trying to mock her or impersonate her in the film. Vanity Fair reports Streep actually sympathised with her: “It interested me that Anna Wintour was expected to be smilier, nicer, sweeter. I thought, ‘Well, hell, what is her job? What does she have to do? What are her deadlines? What do we have very little time for, even though the dress and heels have to have the outward accoutrements of being appealing, womanly?’”

With the pressure bound to be intense on Shulman’s successor, it’s important for female leaders to be themselves, rather than getting trapped in the myths surrounding femininity and business. Read more about how Netflix’s CTO believed she had to look and act like a man to be successful.
