Hung parliament ignites HR worry over workers rights

A hung parliament has been called in UK politics, following a marathon election campaign that saw the country flock to the voting booths. And whilst many may be unsure of the result, HR professionals wait with baited breath over what this means in regards to promised policies and employment law changes.

One of the main points called into question following the announcement of a hung parliament deals with worker rights. The rise of the gig economy means that firms have been disputing what exactly constitutes an ‘employee status’.

“Ensuring rights for workers in the ‘gig economy’ is an important focus for any future government and the Conservative-commissioned Taylor report in to modern employment practices will report on these areas,” explains Alan Price, Employment Law and HR Director of Peninsula.

“Although the Conservative manifesto was silent on zero-hours contracts, in contrast to the other parties, Taylor has indicated that he will recommend a right to request zero hours’ contracts.”
