Firms such as Netflix have been famed for their enviable HR policies, which allow members of staff to take as much holiday as they like.
In an article published in Harvard Business Review, Patty McCord, the creator of Netflix’s 124-page document titled: ‘Netflix Culture: Freedom & Responsibility’, explained why having no rules empowers employees: “If you’re careful to hire people who will put the company’s interests first, who understand and support the desire for a high-performance workplace, 97% of your employees will do the right thing.”
And it’s not just Netflix that recognises that employees don’t want ping pong tables in their offices, they want more time off.
Recently we spoke to Iain Thomson, Director of Incentive and Recognition, Sodexo Benefits and Rewards Services, who says: “Whereas Gen X or baby boomers chose to save their disposable income for large investments, such as purchasing a house, it is clear that those currently in their twenties and thirties prefer to spend money on experiences and leisure activities.
