Will GDPR result in a seismic shift on how data is managed?

Non-compliance ramifications for GDPR will be crippling. Fines could reach €20million, or four per cent of a company’s total global revenue, whichever is higher, and these harsh measures have prompted a wave of hysteria around meeting regulations before the May 2018 deadline.

However, high-profile hacks are highlighting lax security measures in UK businesses, yet research suggests that many organisations are still in the dark about how to safeguard themselves. According to a study by Advanced, one quarter of business are still unsure if they will be ready in time for the regulation.

As Sharon Heys, Legal Counsel at the SANS Institute points out, getting ready to comply with GDPR is creating a lot of work for organisations. “What’s more, concerns still remain about the impact the new legislation will have,” she says. “For example, what does GDPR mean for those involved in managing personal data within the workplace? Is the legislation simply a case of more administration? Or will the new laws have real purpose and effect for staff?”

It's clear GDPR cannot be just another a box-ticking exercise – but how will firms cope with such a seismic shift towards the management of data?
