Dr Employer: How to support transgender employees

An inclusive employer should be able to provide a safe and happy environment for all their staff members, including those who are transgender.

Stonewall, the LGBT charity, says that people perform better at work when they can be themselves, and that includes being able to live as their preferred gender.

Recognising the challenges trans staff face is the first step in helping to create a workspace that includes and supports them. The EU LGBT survey in 2012 found that 86% of British transgender people think trans discrimination is widespread in the UK.

Stonewall also found that colleagues can be insensitive about a transitioning colleague.
