3 strategic lessons from Game of Thrones

We’ve been plunged back into the heady world of mythical prophecies, family grudges and epic power struggles, as Game of Thrones returns to our scenes with a resounding thud. And whilst we enjoy the swashbuckling saga for its seemingly unending plot twists, we’re also treated to several important lessons on strategy dancing between the main storylines.

We’ve collected three instances of when George R R Martin taught us to appreciate the strategic genius inherent in the Seven Kingdoms, and pondered on what we can learn from our favourite fictional romp.

1. Alliances are everything

Remember The Red Wedding – an instance so gorily dream-shattering that it’s imprinted in the mind of all unsuspecting fans? On the surface, everyone is happy. Rob has decided not to marry a Frey girl – he’s content with his Volantis-faring bride. Lord Frey doesn’t seem to mind too much, and invites everyone in for a reconciliation feast. However, soon we come to realise that the Freys have made a dangerous alliance with Lord of the Dreadfort, Roose Bolton. Everyone is slaughtered - putting an end to the Stark dream of winning the North, all because Rob forgot just how integral alliances are in battle.
