Sir Cary Cooper is a Professor, Psychologist and President of the CIPD. Described as the “media’s first choice for comment on workplace issues”, he knows a thing or two about employee wellbeing.

As Lead Scientist on the Foresight Review of Mental Capital and Wellbeing, Cooper has spent years researching workforce wellbeing and how organisational structures can impact their staff – in both a positive and negative manner.

    We may use the word wellbeing and yet we may have a very different definition.

    Organisations are wise to invest time gathering data from their line managers on one question: how do you define wellbeing? Provide an example of your personal wellbeing activity.

    The organisation will then have gathered data relating to 'what is' (what's done) versus 'what should be' (its stated definition of wellbeing).

    To realign the espoused theory with what is, involves undergoing a beliefs/schema reconstruction plan. To truly do this with existing line managers is time consuming and/or expensive. Success also depends largely on their willingness to see a different belief system. It most definitely can be done: employing Roger's level of empathy and commitment.
