The recent announcement that Peter Capaldi would be hanging up the keys to his TARDIS this Christmas has left fans speculating as to who would be the best replacement.

The iconic role of Doctor Who has always been played by a white man. Of course, the actors have come in all shapes and sizes, have often sported different outfits and accents, but essentially each one has been a carbon copy of their predecessor.

This debate has shed light on succession planning issues in executive roles, such as hiring diversely and dealing with change management. The former has people asking why the new hire should fit in with earlier trends, the latter has us questioning how to deal with a "rule-breaking" appointment.

Whilst some people argue that the original Doctor was written to be a male, others rebuff this saying that, as time and expectations change so too should leadership values. When we place that in the context of a Boardroom, we can see the relevance it has on forward-thinking executives.
