Early in his tenure, Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been unequivocal about the need to prioritise and rebuild technical education, skills training, and work experience.
In a late July statement, Burnham noted: "In a fundamental change to the education system, we will introduce new technical education pathways from 14 – prestigious routes that will give students the chance to combine the core academic subjects with the skills, technical knowledge and experience they need to get quality, well-paid jobs."
Burnham’s pledge builds on work undertaken by the Starmer Labour Government between 2024 and 2026.
The Dutch angle
In late June of this year, Dutch-style employment support to the tune of £2.5billion was pledged to tackle rising NEET numbers.
