Podcast | CPO, IRIS: Why smart employers still embrace 'day one rights' thinking

Stephanie Kelly, Chief People Officer at IRIS Software Group

When the government scrapped its headline manifesto promise to give all workers the right to claim unfair dismissal from their first day of a job, it came as a ‘surprise to many.’

But while protections will now begin after six months in the job, some leading employers say they will still hire as if day one rights still exist.

Stephanie Kelly, Chief People Officer at IRIS Software Group, says that despite the government’s U-turn, the underlying risk for employers hasn’t gone away. Hiring the wrong person, failing to onboard effectively, or leaving development to chance still leads to poor performance, disengagement, and costly exits.

Kelly joins the HR Grapevine podcast to explore how firms can embrace “day one thinking” – with examples from IRIS about how the company screens beyond CVs and invests immediately in staff development.
