‘Intrusive & exploitative’ | Uber faces legal battle over use of AI to set driver pay

Uber has been told to end its use of an AI-enabled pay system by a group representing drivers across the UK and Europe, over claims it has significantly reduced their income since 2020.

Worker Info Exchange International (WIE) submitted a formal letter before action to the ride-hailing app operator last week, alleging it has breached European data protection (GDPR) law.

It follows a study published by WIE in partnership with the University of Oxford earlier this year, which says that over four in five long-serving, UK-based Uber drivers (82%) now earn less under the dynamic, AI-driven pay system.

Uber has refuted the accuracy of the study and defended its compensation approach, arguing it offers drivers flexibility and transparency.
