'Generational change' | UK-US tech deal promises tens of thousands of skilled jobs & new AI growth zones

The UK and US have signed a landmark “Tech Prosperity Deal” that the government says will create tens of thousands of skilled jobs, accelerate training programmes and unlock major investment in AI infrastructure across Britain. The agreement, announced during the US President’s State Visit, ties together joint research efforts on artificial intelligence, quantum computing and nuclear power with a £31 billion package of private sector commitments.

For employers and HR leaders, the scale of the deal signals an acceleration in demand for digital and technical skills, with new AI data centres, supercomputing projects and growth zones expected to draw investment into regions across the country. Ministers said the programme would deliver “good jobs, life-saving treatments and faster medical breakthroughs for the British people.”

Jobs, skills and regional investment

The government emphasised that the deal is designed not only to strengthen international research links but also to generate new employment opportunities. A North East “AI Growth Zone” is expected to host part of OpenAI’s Stargate UK project at Cobalt Park, channelling billions of pounds of investment and new jobs into the region. Officials said the wider rollout of AI infrastructure in both countries would give local businesses access to the “cutting-edge chips they need to adopt AI, innovate and compete.”

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall framed the agreement as both a vote of confidence in the UK’s tech sector and a practical step towards expanding the workforce in advanced industries. “This partnership will deliver good jobs, life-saving treatments and faster medical breakthroughs for the British people,” she said. “Our world-leading tech companies and scientists will be working together to transform lives across Britain. This is a vote of confidence in Britain’s booming AI sector … that will boost growth and deliver tens of thousands of skilled jobs.”
