For as long as humans have trudged about on ol’ Mother Earth, generation upon generation of young people have tried (and failed) to shirk a reputation for being lazy, entitled, and self-obsessed.
In more recent times, it’s the ‘Gen Z snowflake’ stereotype. But even stretching back to the 4th century BC, we see the same tropes popping up.
“[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances,” said Aristotle, apparently channeling his inner Lord Sugar. “They think they know everything.”
These days, however, we have the benefit of research that shows our younger colleagues are not only hard-working, but that they’re getting a rough deal in the early days of their careers.
