Bosses ban worker from accepting £3k community gift - was it the right move?

Bosses have barred a street cleaner from receiving £3,000 from a community fund-raiser, which was donated to send him on a dream holiday.

Paul Spiers, 63, has been keeping the streets of Beckenham in London, clean and tidy since 2017.

In these past seven years, he has been such a popular figure among the locals that the community set up a GoFundMe whip round, with a plan to treat him to a holiday in the sun.

£3,000 was raised for Mr Spiers’ getaway, until an unfortunate development emerged when Veolia, the contractors who run Bromley Council’s street cleaning services, blocked him from accepting the donations, due to their policies on employees accepting gifts or cash that aren’t part of their salary or bonuses.
