The parliament for fretting employees is meeting under the duvet cover, Monday-Friday, 9-5pm.
Gen Z has never been more anxious, and such is their malaise they are missing the equivalent of one day’s work every week due to mental health concerns. This is a concern for businesses both for productivity reasons and because of the duty of care they owe to their employees: is work making Gen Z ill?
Of course, youth worries is not new. We only need to hark back to the Adrian Mole diaries to see that the young have always waved the flag that questions their fate, the establishment and their role or otherwise in society – not to mention of course, the angst of young love, whether that be a girl called ‘Pandora’ or not.
For many, these years of wilderness between the end of formal education and the getting to grips with the corporate one, is a challenge. Yet, the mental ill health that is ravaging Gen-Z cannot be belittled as ‘growing pains’ or as Caitlin Moran, writing in the Times puts it down to, as ‘simply not having enough cash.’ If only it were that simple.
