Whatever your perception of International Women’s Day (IWD), the day provides a harsh reminder of the systemic oppression women have and continue to face across the world.
When we relate this to a corporate setting, we remember that despite making up roughly 40% of the global workforce, there is an alarming lack of women in leadership roles and sitting around boardroom tables, and the gender pay gap continues to propagate inequality.
The issue of gender inequality is ingrained in society and systemic in its nature. This is illustrated by the fact that less than 3% of all VC funding goes to female-run businesses. This is in-part because male investors dwarf the number of female investors, causing a situation whereby unconscious bias and inequity is left to continue.
Despite the amazing accomplishments of women worth celebrating this IWD, we must ask ourselves: Is the dial is really moving for women in the professional world?
