‘Through failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.”

This was a sentence said to many of us when we were younger, primarily as a means to encourage us to have foresight and plan effectively. Much of the reason why people prepare so diligently for presentations or an important meeting is out of a desire to do well and fear of failing. But what happens when this fear consumes you?

Bestselling American business author, speaker and researcher, Jim Collins, recently said at the 2023 World Business Forum summit that productive paranoia – which refers to employees fearing that lost productivity is due to them – is a good thing for businesses to encourage. This idea is grounded in workers preparing for unexpected setbacks and being paranoid about future situations that could damage your path to getting where you want to be.

At the event, Collins said: “Last time I was here, people thought I was some sort of maniac... because I said to everybody, ‘It’s sunny today, but the storm is coming. I don’t know what it is... It will be a surprise.’”
