Lawyer outlines Manchester United's legal position as decision due on striker's future

As Manchester United prepare to announce their decision over Mason Greenwood’s future, a top lawyer has laid out the precise legal position club officials find themselves in.

Paul Hennity, Employment Law Senior Associate Solicitor at Aaron & Partners, explores the legal red tape surrounding issues such as unfair dismissal claims, as well as the reputational damage the football club could face if the footballer stays with them.

Greenwood, 21, was charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, but charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.

He has not played for Manchester United since January 2022, when he was first arrested. However, as the new Premier League season approaches, the club is now considering whether he should play for them again.
