Electoral Commission hack puts digital security in the spotlight

Recent reports of cyber-attacks on major organisations have thrown the digital security of workplaces right into the spotlight.

First, it was the Electoral Commission revealing this week that it has been the subject of a complex cyber-attack which saw ‘hostile actors’ accessing registers which contained the addresses and names of tens of millions of voters.

The incident was identified in October 2022 after suspicious activity was detected on the regulator’s systems, and it soon became clear that hostile actors had first accessed the systems in August 2021.

The Commission said it has since worked with external security experts and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to investigate and secure its systems.
