Much of the news in the past week has centred around P&O Ferries’ decision to sack 800 members of staff via a video call.
While many experts were quick to question the legality and ethics of the move, recent research has suggested that sackings carried out via ‘Zoom’ are on the rise.
New findings from a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Survey that was carried out for the Daily Mail unearthed that almost a third (29%) of managers have axed someone via video call or knew of a colleague that has done this.
Anthony Painter, CMI’s Director of Policy, commented on the findings, stating: “Firing staff by Zoom is callous and shows a complete lack of empathy. Letting staff go may be a commercial necessity for P&O but there can be no justification for doing it in this way.
