Does being a leader limit the creative freedoms you may otherwise enjoy in other executive roles? It’s an interesting and multifaceted question.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen the evidence supporting this claim in various forms; the most impactful being the resignation of Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, who departed the role with the intention of having greater creative control of his other enterprises – a passion he believed was limited by his position.
Elsewhere, fintech challenger bank Monzo’s CEO Tom Blomfield made the same decision, revealing in an honest post on the Monzo site that he, in fact, abhorred the role he was naturally expected to take as its founder. He noted that the transition from a “scrappy start-up that was iterating and building stuff people really love, into a really important U.K. bank,” (as reported by TechCrunch) limited his creativity, and along with mental health concerns, spurred his decision to resign from his post.
