Fans of football will have watched the drama unfold within Gareth Southgate’s England team for Euro 2020 with baited breath, as the highly-regarded manager looked to wait until the very last second – that being 11pm BST on June 1st, to trim his selections for the competition and submit his list to Uefa.

However, whilst the news is exciting for the 26-man squad of football’s elite who will go on to play a role in the competition, it also means that Southgate has to fulfil an unpleasant task that all leaders must inevitably face at some point in their careers and deliver some bad news.

Southgate must now inform six of his provisional 32-man crew that despite their rigorous efforts and high performance, they will be cut from the squad – ending their dreams of being part of the iconic event.
