To what extent are leaders to blame for business failings?

Former BBC Boss Lord Tony Hall this week confirmed that, following the much-publicised inquiry into the BBC ‘bombshell’ interview between the late Princess Diana and presenter Martin Bashir, which happened under his leadership, he would be quitting his role as Chairman of the National Gallery.

“I have today resigned as chair of the National Gallery,” Lord Hall said, confirming the news to the BBC. “I have always had a strong sense of public service and it is clear my continuing in the role would be a distraction to an institution I care deeply about,” he continued.

The news came after Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden criticised Lord Hall’s initial handling of the interview, and stated that under improper leadership, “the BBC can occasionally succumb to a ‘we know best’ attitude”. He went on to state that “groupthink in any organisation results in a lack of challenge and poor decision making”.
