Chancellor Rishi Sunak is poised to announce a new ‘safety net’ today, which will reportedly see the Government subsidise the wages of workers in pubs and restaurants that have been forced to close under the recently announced restrictions.

According to the Independent, with hospitality venues expected to close in Northern England next week, the new local furlough scheme will reportedly see workers paid two-thirds of their pay.

The treasury revealed that the Chancellor will today announce new support for businesses, after Government minister Gillian Keegan shared that the crisis in northern areas such as Manchester and Liverpool is ‘getting out of control’.

A Treasury spokesperson said: “The chancellor will be setting out the next stage of the Job Support Scheme later today that will protect jobs and provide a safety net for those businesses that may have to close in the coming weeks and months.”
