Like most professionals, it’s likely that you feel like you’re thriving in times when you have no major incidences or challenges; when you’re free to simply carry out your role as best as possible with proficiency and efficiency. It’s satisfying to be able to get down to work without others adding to your workload.

However, there’s a significant downside to comfort – the key element here being that when you aren’t pushed, you also aren’t challenged. Not being challenged may seem like a plus, yet without this, it’s likely that you aren’t growing and realising your full potential. It’s only when the chips are down that leaders truly know what they’re made of.

The true nature of success in business isn’t coasting in easy times, but how you deal with the stress and pressure of harder times. A key example of this is, of course, the recent coronavirus; leaders were forced to jump into action and make high-pressure decisions seemingly out of nowhere.

Those that did so, and looked after their people in the process, are now likely able to gain ground in market share, whilst those who dithered or struggled to forge a path are succumbing to the raft of redundancies and closures that the UK is currently experiencing.
