There appears to be another North-South divide – this time when it comes to competition for jobs.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, UK jobs site Indeed stated that job postings have been down 60% despite almost 1.5million people uploading their CVs in order to find work.
It is in the North that this competition is felt most acutely. Research by Centre for Cities and Indeed found that, on average, there is 50% more competition for roles in the North than the South East of England.
In fact, competition for jobs has increased faster in places where it was already hardest to find a job – with approximately one extra CV per job posting in Luton, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
