When thinking of psychopaths in the workplace, your mind probably wanders to the blood-splattered image of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, wielding an axe over his co-worker.

Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 masterpiece is a scathing indictment of the corporate system – largely due to its tendency to reward qualities commonly found in psychopaths with promotions and greater corporate power.

However, whilst the image is disturbing, it’s highly unlikely that your boss is a psychopath, considering LiveScience research believes that only one per cent of the population hold these tendencies.
