With increased focus on racial inequality at work, many HR functions will be looking at how all the deliverables they own – be it talent acquisition, development or engagement processes – are open, or not, for all individuals in their organisation.

L&D will be no different. In fact, Sukhvinder Pabial, Board Member of the Association of Business Psychology, thinks that L&D might need an overhaul to address some of the “systemic racism” in development.

In a blogpost titled Systemic Racism in L&D Pabial noted that L&D practitioners need to step-up to ensure racism isn’t inherent in the programmes they roll out.

He wrote: “We are incredibly guilty as a profession of fooling ourselves into believing that because of the work we do that we are somehow immune to things like systemic bias, systemic racism in particular, not affected by either conscious or unconscious bias.”
