All companies hoping to return to business as usual in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic may well be in for a shock.
Whilst working life in the UK is, slowly, returning to some form of normality, the effects that COVID-19 has had on the world of work will not be forgotten – both in their positives and negatives.
Furlough, redundancies, pay freezes, part-time hours and widespread economic activity have, of course, had a drastic impact on hiring – effectively reversing years of progression into a candidate-led market. And some groups, such as recent graduates and younger workers, have been hit hardest by the dramatic downturn.
“Youth employment prospects are crumbling,” Gerwyn Davies, Senior Labour Market Adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development recently told The Guardian. “We are already seeing evidence that recruitment has fallen sharply, which is not surprising given that the Government’s focus is on preserving [existing] jobs.”
