Is remote working NOT the future after all?

Remote working has, for many professionals, been the white whale of modern company culture.

The concept of not spending hours each morning putting on a suit, packing into tube carriages or sitting in endless traffic to get to the office, being able to spend more time with family, seems like the ultimate solution to work-life balance, whilst the calming environment of your own home, without others chattering around you or constantly asking for your help, delivers an extra boost to your productivity.

And historically, studies have backed this up; an OwlLabs study stated that people who work remotely at least once a month are 24% more likely to be happy and productive, 86% of people feel that working remotely reduces stress, 77% of people believe remote working improves general health because it allows for a better diet, more exercise, and a generally healthier lifestyle. But the big incentive for bosses? Companies that allow remote work have 25% lower employee turnover than those that don’t and are twice as likely to be leaders in their field.

However, of course, these numbers relate to a time before the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, forcing remote working upon the vast majority of the workforce with only a short warning – and with no definite end in sight.
