UK workers who lied to take a sick day from work cost UK employers a staggering £5.6billion in 2019, new research has found.

The data, which was conducted by office suppliers Viking, reported that, on average, staff admitted that they weren’t actually ill for 38% of the sick days that they took off last year, resulting in 51.9million ‘fake sick days’ being taken.

These fake sick days resulted in huge financial losses for UK employers with the average absence cost at around £107.85

Viking also quizzed 2,000 UK workers on the changing attitudes towards taking sick days at work after data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that sickness absences fell to a low in 2017.
