For many employees, lunchtime is seen as a window of opportunity for people to complete life admin tasks like popping to the shops, catching up with colleagues in a less formal environment or nipping home to walk the dogs.

Given that it is an employee’s sole chance to break up each day in the working week, it is quite possible that workers will plan to socialise over their lunch break. This is largely because employers encourage their staff to have a break from their computer screens, get some fresh air and interact with friends to take their minds off work.

However, there are also those employees who opt to stay chained to their desks over lunch, tuck into a pot noodle and scroll through the latest news to try and separate themselves from the vacuum of corporate life. A recent article published by CNBC has highlighted that a solo lunch hour might not be so bad after all – and may actually help with workplace productivity.

This theory is corroborated by a recent Wall Street Journal article penned by the leadership exert Marrisa King who pointed towards research that insinuates that employees may be better off spending lunch on their lonesome.
