This is a classic situation that professionals find themselves in; they get a new job in an interesting industry, they like their colleagues and enjoy their work, yet one singular factor starts to ween its way into their lives, bringing with it chaos and eventually making them miserable – the boss.
Disliking your boss isn’t just a minor inconvenience; Swedish researchers at the Stress Research Institute in Stockholm studied 3,100 men over the course of 10 years and discovered that those who reported having bosses that they didn’t respect were 60% more likely to suffer from a heart attack, or another life-threatening cardiac condition.
Even aside from actually being life-threatening, having a boss that you hate can have a devastating effect on your career and wellbeing. According to Inc, three out of four employees report that their boss is the worst part of their job, whilst the average organisation is 50% as productive as it should be thanks to less-than-optimal leadership practices – states research conducted by Ken Blanchard Companies, and 65% of employees state that they’d take a new boss over a pay rise.
So what can you do about your terrible boss?
