How to tell if you're close to burning out

The media furore over the legitimation of the condition known as ‘burnout’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called to light a serious issue. Now that burnout has an official technical definition, which very much confirms that it’s a work-based issue, more and more employees are realising that it applies to them.

A recent Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time employees found that 23% reported feeling burnt out at work ‘very often or always’, while an additional 44% reported feeling burnt out ‘semi regularly’.

Suddenly, employees are analysing their habits both inside and outside of the workplace and realising that they’re simply giving too much of their physical and mental bandwidth to their job. The result, whether they’re aware of it or not, is that both start to deteriorate; people who identified their illness as burnout often report feeling like a cloud is hanging over their ability to be analytical or proactive.

Vision blurs, their brain ceasing the functionality to complete simple tasks, and finding themselves staring blankly into an email template or an excel document are examples of the aftermath of burnout.
