Being made redundant from a job that you need, or genuinely love, is the number one workplace nightmare of many workers.
Unlike being fired, redundant workers may be model employees, with long rich histories in dedicating themselves to company culture and productivity; ultimately, there’s little they can do at all to prevent the inevitable when being informed of their redundancy.
And worryingly, in a time of economic and political instability – and with the current shift in company direction spurred on by the rise of automation and AI – redundancies are an ever-present factor in the lives of many workers. According to the ONS, 3.8 workers are made redundant for every 1,000 in employment in the UK.
However, you can alleviate the stress and anxiety of worrying about the threat of redundancy; mainly, this involves ensuring that you aren’t caught out by being blind to the signs around you that such a move is imminent, therefore allowing yourself time to find another opportunity before suffering the stress of the redundancy process. Often, the best employees in a company will be well-versed in spotting such signs, and therefore are often the first to jump ship.
