One of the oldest pieces of advice handed down through professional circles is to keep your head down and get on with your work without making waves – this, according to the old guard, is how workers are supposed to get ahead in their career. It’s also completely wrong.

This classic advice is built upon the belief that any sort of self-promotion is a cardinal sin in the workplace, which simply isn’t true. Yes, constantly bragging about your achievements or complaining about how much time and effort a task took will damage your prospects, yet so will simply hiding at your desk and avoiding talking about your hard work.

Ask any progressive influencer, business leader or entrepreneur and they’ll tell you that proving yourself is almost useless if no one knows you’re doing it. To create a new company, the most essential element is ensuring that people know that you’re offering a new service, or a better one; workers must think about their own proposition in a similar light. If you’re adding masses of value to your company, only through your senior leadership knowing about it can you use it to climb the career ladder.
