Imposter syndrome is essentially the feeling that regardless of how successful you are, or how much you deserve to be in your current position, you simply don’t feel like you belong. Many individuals that suffer from imposter syndrome say that the feel like they’re fooling everyone and that they spend the majority of their time worrying that they’ll be ‘found out’. 

“People with imposter syndrome have a sense of inadequacy, dismiss their achievements and are very critical of themselves,” Dr. Pei-Han Cheng, a Psychologist at the Centre for Counselling and Consultation at St. John’s University in New York City, told Monster.

“Most of the time, they don’t have an accurate understanding of how competent they actually are because their mind is clouded by this belief that they are a fraud,” he added.

Like other such mental conditions, imposter syndrome can be triggered by anything, such as meeting a new boss or even moving to a new house and due to the nature of the issue, it commonly manifests itself into the professional world – often after starting a new job.

So, if you’re feeling like you don’t belong, like you’re a fraud and that those around you discovering your ineptitude is just a matter of time, you may well be suffering from imposter syndrome. But how can you deal with it?
