Is onboarding key to a good employee relationship?

When HR Grapevine put the question “why is onboarding important” to Lexie Newnham, Head of Talent Brand at MVF Global, a marketing firm, she was clear about the benefit that a good process can have for any organisation.

“How you introduce people to your business can impact who wants to work for you, how quickly they get settled into their roles, how soon they can make an impact, and how long they remain with your business,” she said.

Maggie Old, Head of HR at Kelly, a London-based recruitment firm, agrees. “Onboarding sets the tone for any new hire’s overall employment experience so companies should invest the time and energy into making sure that a new hire employees’ successful transition into their position.”

Simon Connell, General Manager at Webonboarding, a digital onboarding solutions vendor, expands on Old’s point. “From the moment a role is offered, to the first day on the job, new hires make critical judgements which will have a significant impact on their future working relationship - both positive and negative. It’s incredibly important to get this phase right and to build strong foundations.”
