Should your company offer a cycle to work scheme?

There is no doubt that encouraging your workforce to cycle to work is a positive step in creating a happy and healthy company.

Regular cycling sessions have been linked to improved mental health, increased lifespan, decreased chances of heart disease, heart attacks and diabetes, whilst the environmental impact of swapping a car for a bicycle on a commute is the equivalent of ten-times fewer carbon emissions on Britain’s roads.

Whilst the popularity of cycling has skyrocketed in the UK, only 741,000 are commuting purely by bicycle, which represents a minuscule 2.8% of the UK’s working population – and only four per cent of all commuting trips carried out annually.

The UK’s largest cycling population are firmly in the 16 to 25 age group, with those who identify as a student far exceeding all other demographics for the most time spend on a bike and whilst this spells positive things for the health, wellness and environmental impact of those in full-time education, cycling sees a massive decline as soon as young graduates enter the professional sector – despite the fact that the cost to the commuter is around £300 per year compared to nearly £4,000 for a car owner.
