For many graduates, their first foray into the world of employment often proves to be a baptism of fire.

Getting used to a new working dynamic, new colleagues and new responsibilities is certainly a challenge; yet it’s also down to employers to recognise the needs of a fresh-faced starter if they are to gain trust, loyalty and encourage them to stick around.

Unfortunately, many companies fail to offer the right level of guidance and support for those just starting out on their new career path. Graduate employees are all too often viewed as disposable labour; easy to replace rather than given genuine opportunities to progress within the business.

It’s true that staff turnover among graduates is far higher compared with the average employee. A recent ISE study found that employers lose just under half (46%) of their graduate employees within five years. And with the job market as open and agile as it’s ever been thanks to digital hiring and social media, the idea of a ‘job for life’ is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
