“The world as a whole is getting more and more self-absorbed and less and less self-aware,” warns organisational psychologist, Tasha Eurich.
“We are so concentrated on checking our Instagram likes or checking our influencer scores or seeing how many comments we get on a Facebook post,” that we fail to stop and see ourselves objectively. Not only can this murky outlook strain personal relationships, the aftermath of a lack of self-awareness can have crippling effects on work life too.
So, what is self-awareness?
The experienced psychologist defines self-awareness as the “ability to see ourselves clearly, to know how other people see us and to understand how we fit into the world”. This aptitude is a crucial component of human development. Eurich explains that people who are self-aware are “better performers at work, tend to get promoted more frequently, are better communicators and are able to build better relationships”. So, it seems as if it is in everyone’s best interest to become more self-aware.
